Disposition Authorities for Individual Classifications for Headquarters Case Files. Part B: Classification 187. Privacy Act - Criminal Violations.

This classification was established on February 9, 1976, for investigation of violations of the criminal provisions of the Privacy Act (5 USC 552A). These violations include government employees willfully disclosing "individually identifiable information" to any person or agency not entitled to receive it; maintaining a system of records as defined by the Privacy Act without meeting the Act's notice of requirement of publication in THE FEDERAL REGISTER; and a person knowingly and willfully requesting or obtaining any record concerning an individual from an agency under false pretenses.

The FBI established this classification when it assumed responsibility for ascertaining the protection capabilities and weaknesses of defense plants.
